Gorilla Protection Blog: your thoughts?
This blog was developped during the gorilla crisis to help us protect them. It was incredibly useful. It raised unprecedented awareness in the world media, it built us a large number of supporters and it helped us raise money.
Now that the crisis is easing off, and we can breath a bit, I’d be really interested in any feedback from you on how best we could use this blog to help protect the gorillas.
My main thoughts are:
- to keep people informed on the lives of the gorillas and the efforts of those trying to protect them. Above all letting everyone know when there is a serious problem that threatens to kill the gorillas.
- to enable people to provide direct support to the rangers who are protecting the gorillas
- to give people quick feedback on what we are doing, and also on how we have used the gifts that we’ve been given.
I would like to carry on posting the day-to-day happenings, which include our encounters with the gorillas which are a lot of fun for us. I’d also like to carry on writing posts on what we do to protect them (like the anti-snaring work that we do). I’ll be posting stuff on the work we do with the local communities, gorilla monitoring, and anti-poaching.
I would love to share with the world the incredible lives of the gorillas - their behaviour, their interactions and the rest. Hopefully we’ll have lots of information on the different gorilla families soon and a map of their locations. If you have any ideas on how you would like me to do that, please do post a comment.

I’d personally like to see more photos with your posts! Of all you wonderful Rangers, and of all the Gorillas that you’re working to protect.
I’d love to hear about the different Gorilla families, I’d like to hear about all of the snares that you take down, and I’d like to have an active blog to link to on my websites to invite others to read
Yes, please keep up the wonderful work! However, is it wise to show exact maps and descriptions of the locations of the gorillas because wouldn’t that help the poachers? Yes, it is nice for us but that is far less important than protecting them from poachers.
I agree that giving too much detail on locations could be used by poachers. I would like to see a better way to respond to questions along with a Frequently Ask Questions section. I would encourage your readers via email responses to help promote the site to their friends and by linking directly to you. I have added a link to the site from my site at http://www.iloveparks.com where I am also helping Rwanda with a public library project and the work of DFGFI. Are you receiving support from DFGFI?
I want to hear what you guys do everyday. Everything really, whatever you can share
Photos are great, but the gorilla’s privacy and welfare comes first of course.
I’ll be donating money some time this year, I hope for it to be a nice sum to help you guys out.
Keep up the great work
Whatever you choose to share with us is very welcome. Some of my friends are now regular readers of your blog, too. Keep up the incredible work!

Thanks for all these comments, they’re very helpful, and I’ll try to address them as best I can.
Sheryl, absolutely! we’re really new to all this blogging stuff, but we have two cameras now and will try to put as much as we can
Chris, yes, you’re absolutely right. We spend most of our days worrying about that. We’re planning to put a very general map of where the home ranges are. This would not help the poachers because it would be much too general (we’ll do it so that it’s impossible to actually locate them). Also, not many people use the internet, least of all the rangers. The main thing is for showing where the patrols have been. But your point is excellent.
Rick, I read your questions and wanted to respond, but it’s been so busy these last few weeks. Thanks so much for linking my blog. I’ll run your suggestions by the WildlifeDirect team who are based at Mutsora in Virunga.
Rebecca, thanks so much. I’ll try my best. Thanks so much for your efforts to help us and the gorillas. Have you thought of becoming a Gorilla Conservation Associate. We’d team you up with one of my rangers and you’d work with him to protect the gorillas (campaigning for the cause, fundraising, spreading the word etc). Some people prefer to be directly involved in our work as well as donating.
Sheryl, a month ago, nobody knew about our work and the problems that we were facing. It’s thanks to what you and many others have done in that way, that we are now in a much stronger position. Thanks so much! I’ll do my best to keep the blog going as best I can.
I found your blogs on the second day of your posts,as I was searching for something to help elephants. The crisis of the gorillas appeared more important and I had no idea what the rangers did. I am so overwhelmingly impressed with your courage and devotion!I am thankful for anything I read. I agree, protect the gorillas by not posting exact locations. We that have found your blogs will be here to support you and will do our best to help raise money and awareness for their plight. Thank you for all that you do for them! You are truly heros to me and I pray for your safety every day.I love the direct involvement with your group!I want to see you get the full benefit of the monies sent to you!I am working on fundraising plans to raise more money to help. Thank you for allowing us to hear your day to day life.
If you could have links that I could put on my website that would be awsome! Then I could show this site to all of my friends!
