Name the Newborn Mountain Gorilla

Published by admin at 4:29 pm under Mountain Gorillas, Rugendo Family

As you can imagine, we’re very excited about the birth of the Mountain Gorilla on Saturday. This is the first Gorilla to be born since starting the Gorilla Protection blog and we are thrilled to welcome this new addition to the Rugendo family.

Normally the naming of the Gorilla is left to the Park Rangers who track the family, but given all the support that we have had through the Gorilla Protection blog we have decided that we would be honoured if it was left to our readers to make suggestions for a new name.

Keep in mind that it takes a few months until we are able to determine the sex of the Gorilla, but we trust that you will be able to come up with some suitable names.

I hope that should the sex be established as male then Paulin would make a fine name for the baby!

    Take care,

    Matt

I think it is obvious that it should be Paulin - and if a female then just add an ‘e’ so you get Pauline.

I was in Bukima in September last year, visiting Humbas family, and I am so happy to hear that you are back in the area.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We’ve made a list of all the names that you’ve suggested. In the end, we named the baby gorilla Ndeze after a Mwami (chief) who died at the same time as the gorilla was born. Mwami Ndezi was always very supportive of the park, and cared a lot for the gorillas. He played an important part in their survival through the war because he had enormous influence in the area. I’ll write a post on his life shortly.
