Ndakasi has a respiratory infection and is not eating

Published by admin at 12:58 pm under Kabirizi Family, Mountain Gorillas, Threats

Ndakasi has been suffering from a respiratory infection since last night. The vet thinks it could be pneumonia. She is breathing with difficulty and since 1am today is not eating. We are trying to entice her to drink milk via a pipette. I will keep you all informed. Paulin

OH NO — I HOPE SHE GETS ANTIBIOTICS BUT I CAN TELL THIS CAN’T BE GOOD –
GOSH THIS IS ALL SO SAD — THEY JUST NEED THEIR MOTHERS SO DESPERATELY TO SURVIVE — I AM SO SADDENED.

Sorry to hear. Wonder if hot water bottle
    or heating pad would help?
(Surely they have a sense of humour, Stephanie.) Lil guy needs cheering up … fresh air? What
    about a mirror?
Some rehabilitators use donated fur for their
    orphaned animals to sleep on.
(It should be noted these furs are donated only
    and NOT purchased.)
    All the best.

I was also thinking of a hot water bottle, pureed banana or something to settle the stomach.

Or maybe cover her in towels. Do they sweat out illnesses like humans do? I know that when animals feel ill, they don’t eat and this is good for them b/c it allows the toxins to pass. But she is too young to not eat. Keep us posted Paulin.

That’s just not fair. Poor kid hasn’t had a chance at a good start in life. I’ll keep hoping Ndakasi will improve. Thanks for keeping us posted, Paulin.

It’s been so sad reading the past several updates. I’ll be thinking about you all and Ndakasi. I hope that she gets better soon.

Uh-oh, Ndakasi will grow into a silverback like his papa (previous posts refer to Ndakasi as a he,
not a she). Misses his momma, right now.

Is it possible to donate to Gorilla Protection, other than via the internet?

You and your staff deserve a reward for hanging
    tough. It cannot be easy.
I am sorry to hear about your terrible losses and the damage that has been done to the Kabirizi family.
My initial reaction was outrage, and now I hope the takers of life can be brought to justice
    and your men compensated.

This is my first visit to your site and I plan to check back on your work. I applaud you, your family and organization for helping the Gorillas. I wish you all the best, especially little Ndakasi.
    THANK YOU.

I applaud you on the efforts you are putting to save Ndakasi! However, what kind of treatment have the vets recommended for pneumonia and his general health? Is medication available locally? since one will have to move fast to save his life!

Just posted a link to Paulin’s blog at “Native Voices Blog Out of Africa”, an article focused on Kenyan bloggers, by McClatchy Newspapers (Washington bureau), with your information about WildlifeDirect. How much happier the world would be, if we all cheered for gorillas and the native wildlife across the globe!
