The Rangers at Bukima protecting the Mountain Gorillas

Published by admin at 7:53 am under Augustin Kambale, Mountain Gorillas, Rangers

I wanted to introduce some of the Rangers at Bukima who work in protecting the Mountain Gorillas by going out each day to check the families are safe and well and removing snares laid by poachers. These snares are not necessarily laid specifically for gorillas, but gorillas also run the risk of walking in them and getting caught so they have to be dismantled.

You already know Augustin Kambale, head of the patrol post at Bukima. He posted previously about his recent wedding and he also was one of the Rangers who carried Rubiga off the mountain after she was found dead.

You also know Jean-Marie. He takes over from Augustin when Augustin is on leave or sick.

This is Frederic.

Here he is with the Humba family on Saturday.

And this is Cyril.

And Abaruwma in the foreground, with Gerome and Desire behind him.

Here they are taking the GPS coordinates as they enter the park. This wall you see is the dry stone wall that was built in 2004 by the local communities to delineate the park. This is the wall that has to be repaired when elephants and buffalo crash through it to get to the crops in the fields.

And here is Frederic in the background with a journalist and photographer from the Washington Post who were visiting at the weekend.

Everyone has smiles…Thats good to know they are happy, considering the situations they face everyday. I know alot of us say we would love to be there and I know I would until I ran into something I didnt need to see or want to see, but the situations there probably arent that peachy at times. But to all you guys keep your chins up and the grins on cause us the people DO really care no matter where we are from…Steph

Hello to you all. I just wanted to ask, when I pull up my post on the internet I get all the text down the side of the photos instead of underneath. Does that happen for you too? I am wondering if it is because I have a slow internet connection or if something is wrong. I have told WildlifeDirect. Thank you, Paulin

Hello to all of the rangers! It is so nice to see everyone and be able to attach faces with names. Be careful out there and thank you for all the work you do in such stressful or dangerous situations.

THIS IS THE BEST BLOG EVER — I LOVE READING IT AND THE PICS YOU POST ARE SO INFORMATIVE AND GREAT — YOU ARE ALL THE VERY BEST!!!!

Hi Paulin, Yes, the captions (text) you typed in below the pictures are realigned (moved) to one side, which I see too in your post. You may want to put numbers by the captions that denote (indicate) which pictures you are describing - (1) Augustin; (2) Jean-Marie; (3,4) Frederic; (5) Cyril; (6, 7) Abaruwma, Gerome, Desire; and (8) Frederic with journalists. The software program (not connection) does this by default (automatically). It is a graphics issue. We are happy to see the Rangers in good spirits (congrats Agustin on your wedding!). I look forward to the Washington Post article on the life of your Rangers and the gorillas in the Congo.

Although why this has not happened in previous posts, I do not know. On July 2, Monday, text that had appeared (”Jean-Marie” … “update”) beside the first picture was gone by the time my comment was submitted (12:57 pm). As you can see, I thanked JM for recent update.

I cannot go to a daily post and then back to the main page on your blog without being asked if I “want to send a form again?” by my web browser, so maybe the monitors are monitoring the monitors, since this did not happen prior. C’est la vie.

I am so happy that the post did a story on what is happening to the gorillas in virunga. it’s an important one, i hope the story will help you get donations..and make people aware of what is going on there, i just signed up for a monthly one….thank you for helping protect these majestic beautiful animals, so that when my baby grows up we can go together and see the gorillas in the wild.
    THANK YOU AGAIN.
