Rugendo Family Attacked: 3-6 members killed.
This morning we found three dead females from the Rugendo family. They had all been shot dead. There may even be six gorillas killed in total.
I wish I could tell you more but we are still trying to piece together the information that we have.
We are deeply shocked.

Daily news from the conservation frontline by Innocent and Diddy, and other Congolese rangers risking their lives to save mountain gorillas of the Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
Oh my God. I’m stunned speechless. I’m so sorry.

I am very sorry. Even though this is a huge setup, please don’t give up the fight.
I am deeply saddened by your news. I know that you are doing all that you can to find who did this and help the remaining gorillas. Without the important work carried out by you and your team, we would unfortunately be hearing about even more sad cases of poaching.

I cannot believe what I am reading Paulin. I am currently on holiday in England and just read this on your blog. I am totally stunned. There are only 12 members anyway right in the Rugendo family? This is terrible. Where were they? Near Bukima? Who was killed? I know Congomani and Noela. There were no babies in the family as I recall. I also know Rugendo is the most habituated of families, having had contact first with Conrad Aveling in the mid-1980s. This is absolutely heart breaking news. Samantha, WildlifeDirect
Thanks for the link, Lauren. Thank you, Wildlife Direct, for getting the news out to the press so quickly.

is terrible.
i am under shock.
the onli hope for the gorilla is in the men like Paulin.Who has kill the gorillas kill the future of the Congo
Thank you wildlife direct
Oh my God Paulin and Guys…I hope who did this has really really bad dreams. I just cant understand. The people doing this are not human. This saddens me deeply. I will go crawl in a hole now and cry my eyes out. I hope you catch them and I hope they hurt. This just breaks my heart. What does the government think of all of this. Cant they help with the capture of these men?? What will it take to get you more armed men??? Please say a prayer for the slaughterd gorillas for all of us, they are and will always be in our hearts…Steph
All at Gearing Up 4 Gorillas (G4G) are shocked and stunned Paulin. I am just so distraught I don’t know where to put myself.
Tragic. Take care you & your men.
Really sorry to hear the news. It’s so saddening; you are the only hope for the wildlife. Please be safe and take care of your families.
More tragic news. I am so sorry and sad for the rangers, who work so hard to protect these animals. Paulin, you and the rangers must know that if not for all of you going out there risking your lives every day, there would only be 2 or 3 Gorillas left in the wild. Take care out there.
Paulin,
most distressing…are you getting any man power support for protecting the remaining gorillas? has MONUC or anybody stepped up to help you? what can be done for the remaining gorillas? do your men know where the other families are?
Here in Ireland there was an article in the Irish times about your great work over there and the multiple dangers you face everyday. As a lover of Africa and its wildlife todays news pains me and my wife deeply. At the moment my sister in law is honeymooning at Kruger NP - Going on her reports there is some contrast between what you have to face and the garden of eden atmosphere their.
The people behind this slaughter are commiting treason against the people of the DRC. The should be hunted down and shown no mercy for their wanton blood thirsty acts against man and Gorilla, hippo etc.
I am sorry to hear about the tragic events unfolding and offer my support and encourgament to all the rangers for their continued efforts to protect the park and its wildlife. Bonne chance et courage
Total disaster! It almost seems like the shooters knew their victims and hence which ones to go for in order to create most destruction. There is only about 700 mountain gorillas left, how come, after all these year of conservation/protection/research knowledge that they are still not sufficiently protected? It seems like an impossible job if anyone can have direct access to the gorillas. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope someone will come up with a solution on how to protect these lovely and beautiful animals sufficiently. Take good care of yourself.
I just heard about this today. My heart is broken. This has to stop.
I would like very much to help conserve the mountain gorilla. I made a donation to help the rangers in the field but feel like I can do more a lot more. Presently my “squad” is snorkeling around Block Island RI. I will get sponsors for the upcoming swims and donate the money to African Conservation Fund. Sincerely,Monkfish President of Block Island Sea Squad http://www.biseasquad.blogspot.com
Though I am mostly numbed by the way human beings often treat each other this report left me weeping at my desk. I am so sorry yet thankful that people like you and your team exist. for . I will do what little I can to help.
This is a tragic story, so why is there not a removal programme. I appreciate it would be difficult to move them from the wild, but surely there has to be a better way to protect them from people who don’t value their own wildlife.
i couldn’t believe what these people are doing….killing these inocent gorillas. Keep up the good work!! these Gorillas need our help.
Somebody pleaseee help these poor gorillas! I feel so helpless at this point
it is just so frustating for me not beeing able to do something about all this, i`m from Chile and as a 3th world coutry i don`t earn enogth money to do any contributions… wht a shame… in some point this people will get waht they desseve…
I have had a Love for primates from a very early age. I followed Dian Fossey’s research throughout my teens. Her death numbed me. The murders of these friends of Fossey enrages me. I can only give my heart and superb aim through the crosshair.
Have guns will travel! But it all starts in our hearts.
it really makes me frustrated and sad that i can’t but really want to help these Gorillas from being poched. i just wish these people could get a taste of their own medicine. you know what i mean? ( well it means that whatever they do to the gorillas or any other animal, that they get the same exact pain the animals and people are feeling.)
thanks for reading this comment and i hope those killers go to prison!
