Ndeze has been found

Published by admin at 3:35 am under Rugendo Family

An amazing piece of news. We had given up hope on Ndeze, the child of Safari, who was being looked after by her brother. Unfortunately he was unable to feed her. My rangers found her today with her older brother. Her brother was quite calm when our rangers took her from him. She needed to be taken into care because otherwise she would die of dehydration. She was already badly dehydrated. She has been taken to Goma to be looked after by the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project vets, and will be with Ndakasi, our orphan from last month’s attack.

I will update you when I get more news on Ndeze’s progress.

I am absolutely heartbroken with news of the massacre. I will make a donation to try and help the rangers protect these magnificent creatures, but will this stop the killing? What can be done? Does the world need to mobilize and send armies into the area to protect the gorillas? I know conservation and education efforts are intended to help people in the area realize what a treasure they have and to show them they can economically benefit from the gorillas’ presence, but these efforts take time — much more time than the gorillas have to survive. I pray for the rangers and the gorillas and the people of the region. I am so sad.

That is such terrific news about Ndeze. I know that her birth was a bright spot this year, so hopefully she and Ndakasi will give each other strength. And I hope that her brother will be okay too. Amazing that he looked after her like that. Thanks for the update.

Hey y’all look what I found! http://discovery.blogs.com/quest/ OK, maybe everyone knew about Dr. Spelman’s blog but I just found it today when I googled the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project. There’s an update on Ndakasi from July 3 and other posts about her work treating mountain gorillas and the occasional giraffe. Dr. Spelman used to be the director of the National Zoo here in DC, and I’m a volunteer at the zoo’s Asia Trail. She was the driving force in getting the Trail built.

Hopefully, she’ll post an update about Ndeze soon.

The story seems to be breaking now. It’s on MSNBC.com, a paragraph in the WORLD BRIEF section of the Washington Post, and on the WWF Web site.
    Thanks for the link, Sheryl!

I am so glad you found Ndeze! A small, but bright spot amid the horror! Does her brother have other family members to take care of him? I wish the USA could send special forces or the UK the SAS/Gurkhas to help Paulin and his rangers. I wish my legislators here in MA cared about Africa, but they only want to fight among themselves! I pray every day for you Paulin. At least, God was watching over Ndeze!

    Great news Paulin!.
I can help your work only with donation .
I’m not rich but the people like you give me the hope .
Hope for the gorillas, for the people of Congo, for the world.
This is a war against the nature.I am italian and this day the forest of my country are destroyed from the fire.
A lot of people fight the pyromaniacs.
Is necessary to win this war for our children!

    Hi Paulin,
I am not sure if you read these comments or not but as soon as I heard the good news I knew I had to share this with you. I am a christian and have been praying for you, your rangers and the gorillas as I know that people all over the world have been. My prayers the last few days have been that God would send angels on assignment to protect and provide for Ndeze and her brother. My mom and I also have been praying that God would put you in their path and that Gods peace would be on her brother, that he would know that you are friends and let you take his baby sister. There is a verse in the bible that says “Even the animals now his name.”
Yesterday when I was praying I heard God say that you would find her and she would live. I was crying over the murders of the gorillas and I asked God why is this happening? He said “sometimes something bad has to happen for good to come.” I am not sure if you believe in God or not but I know that he is watching over you and that he is going to bless you for what you do. I know that even in the midst of all of this he has a great plan.
The only thing that I can do right now is pray for you, your rangers, your families, your land and your contry (which I feel called to do). Just think of me as your undercover prayer worrier for God. If you need any prayer for anything my email is attached to this comment. Also I would love to send you a bible if you would like one. I hope these words have comforted you.

What lovely news after all this horror, horror. A big thank you to the brother. Good luck with Ndeze’s recovering progress.

Sheryl, thanks for providing the link to Dr. Spelman’s blog. The descriptions of Ndakasi’s recovery and the pics of her with Andres are great! Thank you to everyone - rangers, vets, caretakers, assistants, support staff - who take care of these animals with so much pride and quality of care.

Here is another article I found, which is on the front page of Yahoo.com, titled “Gorilla Executions Puzzle Conservationists”. Here is the link http://news.yahoo.com/s/livescience/20070726/sc_livescience/gorillaexecutionspuzzleconservationists

I’m not sure I can stand much more of this. The human species has lost it’s everloving mind.It seems that nothing living is safe anymore, life of all kinds has become so expendable. As I type this at my desk at work, tears are streaming down my face and my heart is breaking. I haven’t fealt this bad since I first saw the Amazon rain forest on fire many years ago. I am so far away here in the USA, how I wish I could do more than just donate money (which I do). To all of you there at Wildlife Direct, please don’t give up, without you these wonderful creatures are lost. Thank you for your devotion to this cause.

    Its good reading this.
    - all along thought I was the only surving member of the Ndezes some of us even helped Liberate Uganda from dictatorship only to be victims in the process by another emerging dictator - for decades now!

Let us hope and play that some day we too shall have freedom and permanent place of abode.

That poor baby …imagine what she must have went through..and her brother helped save her! So human-like! I hope the bastards that did this burn in hell! God bless Ndeze to grow strong and healthy and get over her horrible experience!

  17. […] also urge you to follow the progress of Ndasaki and Ndeze, the orphans of these two recent attacks, over on Dr Lucy Spelman’s blog who works for MGVP […]

I was showing my five year old daughter photos of gorillas. We came across this wonderful news. I said, “See, honey, see how gorillas are like humans?” She said, “Yes, mommy, I do. Will she ever see her brother again.” I told her that I do not know but I hope so.
