Another Gorilla Dead

Published by admin at 12:29 pm under Mountain Gorillas, Rugendo Family

Macibiri, the female adult who went missing the day of the attack, is dead. Just twenty minutes ago, the guards came back from their patrol with her remains.

DSC01250-1.JPG

Innocent, Guard in charge of Gorilla Monitoring, with the remains.

Her infant, Ntaribi born 26th January of last year, has not been found. These bones were found in the same area as the massacre three weeks ago, and we think that maybe a carnivore had eaten the meat and dragged these bones away from the rest of the carcass. Tomorrow we will do a full search of the area to find the rest of the remains.

This now brings the definite total to five, but now that the Mother has been found, we are sure that the infant is dead too.

Oh my god….I was hoping she had gotten away….Seems to me someone is trying to keep the gorillas from breeding. They killed the alpha male and most of the females. What gives here. At least now she can get a proper burial. This just breaks my heart when I hear of this ____. People are going to have to learn to protect the earths animals. To kill just to kill is completely insane. I really, really hope you guys find who has done this..or have you and we just havent heard of it yet????…steph

My heart stopped when I read the title of this post. I was so hoping you’d find Macibiri and her baby alive.

This is truly insidious and evil. They ARE killing the silverbacks and breeding female in an attempt to make the mountain gorillas extinct.

Are there any suspects for this crime? I read a rumor on a news Web site that a suspect is in custody. I’m so angry and so disgusted about this vile act that I hope all the perpetrators are caught and spend their lives rotting in jail. In the future anyone caught harming the gorillas, or any other animals in the park, should be shot on sight. Leave THEIR bones for another carnivore to eat.

Oh No — it is so heart breaking and knowing that the little one suffered & probably starved because its Mom died first — a tragedy beyond words — I think about it all the time — whoever did this definitely had a plan to wipe out breeding females - it is so obvious.

  4. SCOLSONon 16 Aug 2007 at 3:29 pm

Yeah Sheryl tell them about it…Oh god wanda didnt think about the baby starving to death….Yeah I hope you guys catch them and hang them from a tree and let the gorillas take turns with them…:):):)…steph

    nooooo…!
The mankind is the very plague of the world, and the animals are the innocent victims.
    Is another terrible news

This truly sad news. I was so hoping she had moved in with another family.

  7. Garyon 16 Aug 2007 at 6:48 pm

It’s really sad to here the news. I hope the people responsible are found. Everyone keeping giving and spread the news. We have to keep the rangers payed and to keep their spirits up.

  8. Annieon 16 Aug 2007 at 8:41 pm

What heartbreaking news….this has got to stop! The only thing from this is that the rangers have some closure as to what happened to mama Macibiri…I don’t even want to imagine what happened to her child! So horrible………

Heartbreaking news! I too, think about it all the time and am telling anyone that will listen about this website and the plight of these awesome beings. The thought that someone is doing this to wipe them out is just sick beyond words. I hope whoever did this is wiped out and the gorillas are left in peace to rebuild their peaceful lives. Amazing that we can put men on the moon but yet seem unable to do anything about the plight of these great apes……the world has truly gone mad !!!

This is truly sad news, and I wasn’t even keeping up with the story of Macibiri and her family trying to survive. I happened upon it while checking BBC news for the latest. While it hurts to think that these animals were ruthlessly executed, can I please remind everyone on this blog site that there is a GENOCIDE occurring in the Congo at this minute where human females are being targeted for rape and extinction? Can we please make the necessary connections here and realize that the complete disregard for such lives locally and globally (last time I checked, there wasn’t much outrage for those WOMEN who are being slaughtered in the same region) translates to a complete disregard for ALL lives, hence the senseless murder of the gorillas? It breaks my heart to hear of such atrocities, but I will NOT contribute to yet another “Africa is such an evil and backward place and those natives must be stopped and killed” narrative because that’s just not helpful! If we recognize Africans as regular human beings, then maybe they will start recognizing their own humanity and translate that humanity to all living beings.

My heart goes out to both Macibiri and her human cousins who are both victims of senseless violence in the Congo (violence waged, I might add, so that poor and starving Africans can participate in the global economy that many of us - including those on this blog site - are contributing to by consuming computer technology - did you not know one of the main warfares in the Congo is over the control of raw materials that contribute to the computer technological economy?)

  13. Annieon 17 Aug 2007 at 4:28 pm

Did not know that about the warfare in the Congo being over raw materials contributing to the computer technological economy….but you have to pick and choose which issues to support….Yes there are horrible atrocities in the all over the world…however man has contributed to this not ANIMALS! they don’t carry guns!

  14. Lisaon 18 Aug 2007 at 3:02 am

I do agree with not wanting to contribute to the “Africa is such an evil and backward place and those natives must be stopped and killed” narrative. Especially when these poor villagers need to make charchoal to cook their food and keep themselves warm. What other options do they have? Human encroachment into wilderness is happening ever faster all over the world. For our planets very survival we must learn to peacefully coexist with wildlife and maintain fragile ecosystems everywhere. Education is the answer. However, the killings of these mountain gorillas was a sensless and illegal act upon endangered animals and who ever did this must be caught and punished appropriately. Lisa, California

It’s a pretty sick day when you read about this sort of wanton slaughter of an endangered species.

Sympathies to all the staff and rangers, who’ve had to catalogue this stark discovery.

  16. Rister Leviton 18 Aug 2007 at 12:07 pm

I must say - i dont understand this thing. I dont care about those gorillas. Gorillas, rhinos and etc. get too much attention. In my mind they are lost. All the atention should go to wolves, bears, elephants who still can be saved. I cant understand your point of view (and actually noone ever cared to explain also). And PS! Keyboard warriors - dont shoot me now through internet. I want as many species survive as its still possible. Right now few species take all attention.

  17. H Bon 18 Aug 2007 at 3:28 pm

Rister Levit, what are you talking about? Mountain gorillas still exist. They are not lost.

  18. Tazzon 19 Aug 2007 at 6:23 pm

    hey Rister Levit,

you, your a sick puppy… anything and anyone can be saved with enough effort… the problem here is you do not care… so you do not matter…
    savvy?

I am feeling so ill at the moment and just do not know what the world is coming to - all animals have the right to life just like humans. Problem: humans, supposedly this race was given a brain to think with and a heart to feel with. Look what this race does to one another - how can we hope for them to understand the balance of life much less the existance with other specis. It is such a shame we cannot all get along and leave these helpless animals to live their lives as naturally and peacefully as we can.

  20. Shelly Tudoron 22 Aug 2007 at 6:31 pm

Ok, so what is the solution. If these animals are being killed due to a need for coal, is it possible for nations to get together and provide these communities with coal. Can we use income from these parks to go towards any thing at all with regards to funing some sort of project to providing coal for these communities other than destroying the last of these habitats? Can we provide an alternative to coal for these communities. Can these communities use solar, wind and water energy conversion for cooking, heating and purifying water. If so, lets all get on it! Sympathy letters is great, but action to change this course is better.

  21. Shelly Tudoron 22 Aug 2007 at 6:35 pm

Post Script. No excuse for my typos; ie funding, not funing, and Sympathy letters are great, not is great.

I can’t believe it! Who would want to do that? I mean come on don’t these people have any idea what there doing?Gorillas are very sweet, I can understand why someone would kill a gorilla if it hurt them or someone but, still. Killing a gorilla is not right, and anyone who kills an endangered animal should be punished! Not only a little either I mean liike big time! WELL GOOD BYE GORILLA LOVERS!

Hello, of course I came to visit your site and thanks for letting me know about it.
I just read this post and wanted to say it is full of number one resources. Some I am familiar with. For those who don’t know these other sites they are in for a treat as there is a lot to learn there.
