1 Ranger Killed, 1 Seriously Wounded

Published by admin at 1:18 am under Rangers, Threats

Last night the Kabaraza Patrol Post, 30km North of Rutshuru, was attacked by rebels. One park ranger was killed and another is seriously wounded with a gunshot in the neck.

Over these last few days tensions have increased in this area and there are worries that the situation could deteriorate further.

Rob Muir from FZS, and Augustin from WWF left early this morning to go to the wounded guard and provide emergency supplies. More details will be given upon their safe return.

My thoughts are with the families, its so tragic that this should happen while protecting the gorillas. i wish the injured ranger a speedy recovery. It makes you realise what you all put on the line every day. Good Luck to you and all the guys

Christ almighty, these rebels are bold. The idea of attacking park rangers is so out of our reality here that it’s truly shocking. I am sorry for the ranger who died and for his family. I hope the ranger who’s wounded recovers completely. I don’t see anything in Google news about this attack, but there is a story about recent rebel clashes in eastern DR Congo: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/6970907.stm

I also wish the injured ranger a speedy recovery. My thoughts are with you, the brave men who continue to risk your lives everyday to protect the gorillas and with the families of these rangers. Having been in Virunga treking the gorillas 3 weeks ago I am absolutely shocked to the core. Stay safe.

We helplessly read the blog and get the bad and sometimes good news and our hearts wish there was something we could do from here in the U.S.– Support, hope, prayer and donations seem to be all we can hope to contribute until all governments worldwide stop the brutal attacks on the people and animals in this world.

    Another shoking news !.
My pray is for the rangers and the families. All Heroes.
But is necessary the action from the public opinion of the west world.
For years we have speak about Iraq and Afghanistan.
The wars in Africa are more bloody (one million of deaths only in Ruanda)and dangerous for the instability(see the Somaly).
US and UE do help with a great plan of development the people of Africa against the logic of war

Of course, I agree with everyone and my heart goes out to the Ranger’s and their families. This is so wrong and I feel so helpless to provide anything that will relieve this suffering. We all need to write our local Representatives and in Congress and inform them that we would like our government to get involved. I agree with Antonia, we need to have our voices heard. Please stay safe. Lisa, California

Oh William, I am so sorry to hear about what is going on there. Many thoughts and prayers to the families of the lost ranger and his wounded comrade, and of course to each and every one of you who puts your lives on the line every day. Be safe and keep us posted.

And Antonio…I completely agree with you…much more attention needs to be paid to violence and instability in Africa, especially when we know how many good people (and animals) are getting caught in the cross-fire.

This is the first time I have ever commented, but the tragic news could not be ignored. My thoughts and prayers to the families and rangers.

Reading about this blog has opened my eyes to these terrible events. Thank goodness it is so easy to donate money nowadays with PayPal. I am determined to do some fund raising with my friends. These rebels need to be vigorously repelled!
