Giving Thanks

Published by admin at 7:05 am under Your Donations

As today is Thanksgiving in the US, it seems appropriate to thank you all for your donations this last week. That is 15-21 November, inclusive. A special thank you to Pamela T who donated $100 in honor of Lynne G and Paul B.

And for those of you who didn’t read my comment on the previous post, fighting has calmed in Rutshuru and Kiwanja and Diddy and Innocent’s families are safe. Rebels and army retreated to previous positions, and now we have to wait and see what will happen.

From all the Gorilla Protection Blog Team: Diddy, Innocent, Norbert, Jean Bosco, Augustin, Samantha

Samatha, just being curious about the amount of money, which you would need to run the protection operation without having to face financial difficulties? You must have some kind of estimate to keep you going on a annual basis.

Freaking amazing. Glad to hear that everyone is safe. I did read that incredible letter in the previous post from the women of North Kivu. Wow. Very powerful. That should get spread around to the press, so I hope Human Rights Watch is working it.

To all the other Americans on the blog, have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Pirjo. Let me see if I can come up with some figures for you. I did some work on this a couple of months ago for someone who was interested. It is quite complicated as you can imagine, and obviously we work to support the wildlife authority ICCN in all of this. They are the ones who can protect Virunga National Park, its Mountain Gorillas, and other wildlife. The park is also enormous - 8,000 km2 - and the Gorilla Sector is 250 km2. Another issue is that we consider the whole of Virunga National Park too - you can’t just protect the Gorilla Sector else there will be repercussions elsewhere. So let me work on some kind of figure and content (logs, men, infrastructure etc) - and see where I can get. Thanks

Samantha, thank you for your message. It would be great to have some kind of rough estimate on the cost. You could even have a separate section on the main page of the blog, where one could see the total amount on donations made, and how much is still needed. That could motivate people to join in as monthly donators, instead of giving one time donations.
