We have reached the $20K fuel wood target!
This is Samantha. Diddy & Innocent are still busy on anti-charcoal burning patrols. Diddy was at home in Kiwanja yesterday with his family for Christmas and Innocent was in Goma. Christmas is not celebrated in DR Congo like it is for most of us, but the family is together. The fighting has not abated, and the situation is still very bad.
The GREAT news is that we have SURPASSED the $20,000 target for fuel wood for the refugees. This is absolutely brilliant and is down to the generosity of spirit of each and every one of you. The total is $21,345. Just incredible. The donate item for fuel wood will be coming off the donations list as a result.
Thank you from the Rangers and the WildlifeDirect team. This money is going to be utilized, as stated on this blog several times since the appeal was launched 12th December, to supply fuel wood to IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons) at Kibati. The goal remains the same: to prevent IDPs who are in need of fuel wood to cook and boil water from cutting down the forest in Virunga National Park, and specifically in the Gorilla Sector.

Congratulations on reaching your goal so fast! Altho I already donated before the request, I haven’t been able to post another donation due to internet difficulties (?). Can you and the rangers give us ideas for the long term solutions for future fuel for the local communities which is not charcoal? What other source do they have? Seems like this should be a cross border solution that includes Rwanda and Uganda as well. I would like to donate to the long term solution to stop charcoal production and save gorilla habitat. Is there any word on how the gorillas are doing? Have the Rangers been able to find them? Are they ok? All the best for your fantastic work there.

Yes, Best Christmas present by far! Samantha thanks for this great news. I raised a total of $290 on my campaign site, $75 of which came after the 21st, so all that can be added as well. Family and friends donated for my birthday, which I was completely thrilled by. Shall we keep going on trying to raise money for this cause? Local community people actually monitor the gorillas. I think that is amazing. And he talks about one gorilla that leaves the park to live amongst the cows. He says he will introduce us to that gorilla soon. Anyway, thought I would share that and say “go give Jean Claude Kyungu and the Tshiaberimu site some love”. However, I’ve noticed that some of WLD’s sites are experiencing some technical difficulties; the other night I tried to donate to the gorilla doctors’ milk fund and the paypal option was in a loop.
