Dear Diddy,Innocent, Godefroid, and all the Rangers of Virunga:
Last September, when the figting broke out near your patrol posts and monitoring the gorillas became impossible, I shared your story with my middle school students (ages 12-14 years). You see, I wanted to teach them examples of what true heroes do in this world. Heroes are people who believe in something because it is the right thing to do. And so they do it, despite great danger or discomfort and inconvenience! You do it out of this love for the care-taking of your homelands. You guys are very special people serving a very important cause. I taught my students all about mountain gorillas. We watch video programs about them.
I taught them about your country, DRC, the terrible wars, and about Virunga National Park. We saw 60 Minutes report on the “Kings of Congo.” These kids love the gorillas and elephants. I update them regularly in class about your work in the field and the dangers to you and the animals, and the hardships the good people of the Congo are forced to endure. We are a faith based, private school, and so we pray for you, the people of DRC, the gorillas, and the remaining elephants there. So know that you are in our prayers daily. In the future we will try to contribute to help your patrol efforts. Your commitment is an inspiration to me and these young people. They all understand that your work is critical to giving all future generations from all cultures and nations the opportunity to experience living gorillas in the wild, in the near and far future of our world. Thank You so much for what you do. We have followed your progress all year, but never wrote before. I thought you would like to know how we felt, learning from your work. We have developed strong feelings about this cause. You should be very proud of your chosen work and the education you are providing to people all over the world through the wildlifedirect blogs. When you walk the patrols we will be with you in spirit! We wish you all the best and positive morale in your continuing work!
    God Bless!

The good humour of Diddy and Innocent gives me a great pleasure to see them. I liked much this video which gives a beautiful indication of your concerns. It’s a pity that it is so short. Thank you with all the team. I appréciate the work of Pierre with his camera. Take care please. The world needs of you.

I absolutely loved the video. Thank you Pierre for putting it together. The music was great. I loved the footage of the elephants. They are so magnificant. What a beautiful place Virunga is. It is a jewel that deserves to be protected. I wish more people/villagers/governments could realize this and do more to support the Rangers risking their lives to protect this precious park and it’s wildlife. I’m so very glad that Virunga has these brave Rangers. Thank you Rangers. Keep up the great work and Pierre keep those videos coming. They are fantastic! Lisa

Just fantastic video Pierre - Diddy & all the rangers - you come across so well. Dont know what you’ve done Pierre but my slow broadband meant the vids kept stopping but this one went through in one go - brilliant!
Thank you all & stay safe.

  24. Iris, Parison 04 Jun 2008 at 8:28 am

Hello Linda, there is an easy solution to watching videos on a slow broadband: hit play and when video starts hit pause, wait until video is fully downloaded, than hit play and watch. Pierre taught me that! Take care, Iris

  25. Alex and Mark Son 07 Jun 2008 at 9:37 am

Alex, my 7 yr old son, wants to know if the bad guys who kill gorillas would stop if we have a way to give them a little money through you. But he thinks they want whole lot of money. In that regard, is there a way to finance activities other than gorilla tourism from which preservation of the gorilla habitat would directly benefit?

  26. adminon 08 Jun 2008 at 2:19 pm

Hi Alex and Mark- every little help counts. If you donate even just a small amount, the money will go to the rangers who work every day to protect the gorillas and their habitat. For example, it will go towards sending rangers on patrol to stop poachers and will help to stop the charcoal trade that is destroying trees in the forest. Great to see that the younger generation is taking an interest!
