Video: The Volcano
This is Pierre. Last week I hiked from the Kibati Patrol Post up to the rim of the Nyiragongo volcano, which dominates the skyline of the southern sector of Virunga National Park.
This is the volcano which erupted in 2002 with devastating effect, destroying a fifth of the city of Goma and making 120,000 people homeless.
As you can see from the video I shot, the volcano is quite impressive and still very active. The crater stands at 3,470 meters in altitude, is 250 meters deep, and 2 kilometers wide.
Daily news from the conservation frontline by Innocent and Diddy, and other Congolese rangers risking their lives to save mountain gorillas of the Virunga National Park in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
Too cool……….don’t see volcanoes around here where I live…thanks for sharing!
Such power - awesome…
Great video, Pierre! I loved studying plate tectonics in my college Geology classes. Too bad I didn’t have the math skills to continue on but I still enjoy reading and learning about how our earth moves and shakes.
I want to remind you about the letter writing campaign to the U.S. Congress. We’re urging Congress to put pressure on Rwandan President Kagame to end relations, and funding, with Laurent Nkunda.
You can find a sample letter written by Robin Andreae and information on how to contact your representatives on my blog. Just click my name above and go to the “Wildlife Direct” tab at the top of the page.

Thanks Pierre for these beautiful images. One would be said that the eggs are cooking in the frying pan. Impressing volcan. Attention with its alarm clock… You have been courageous.
WOW!!!!!
Impressive shooting Pierre. Capturing the true volatility that mother nature presents to us. Looking forward to more feeds, and when I will be down there to witness these forces. Keep up the great work!
Stunning Pierre. Nice footage
[…] can also see the video of the volcano that Pierre filmed earlier this […]
I also made a video of Nyiragongo Volcano when I was there on july 2007. I combined the images with music and I think the result is great

Great Shooting Pierre. Remember as they taught on South Park: if the hot lava comes rolling down the hill, duck and cover.
